Centering Anti-Racism, Overcoming Disinformation and Localizing Climate Solutions: Climate Generation’s New Strategic Framework

As the world slowly begins to emerge from this last year of intense global challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and a reinvigorated racial justice movement, Climate Generation is also emerging from a year of strategically focused efforts to chart our path forward — our new Strategic Framework.

While the events of this year have had profound impacts on all of us and our work, we are also heartened to know that our core values remain true, including the knowledge that:

  • Science, our human experience and stories illuminate the challenge before us and defines the urgency and scale of the climate crisis; people coming together to take action defines the solutions.
  • People exerting internal and external pressures on our current political, social and economic systems will create an equitable and resilient future.
  • Just and equitable solutions will only be found through close collaboration and fostering deeper relationships with under-represented and under-included communities.
  • People have innate power and multiple ways of knowing, and we are intentionally curious about the needs, desires, and strengths of the communities we work with.

We are grateful to the talented facilitators that supported our planning, with Advisory Board member Gayle Peterson initiating our early conversations, and Creation in Common helping formalize and develop the plan you see today, with ongoing support and feedback from our Board and staff.

We know that to reach the future we imagine and achieve the ambitious and necessary goal of a just and equitable decarbonized world, we must be bold. We believe this Strategic Framework reflects the unique needs of the moment we are in, and capitalizes on the strengths of Climate Generation’s historical foundation and our current and growing diverse staff.

Our vision is clear and urgent: a world actively engaged with equitable solutions to climate change.

Our task: Igniting and sustaining the ability of educators, youth and communities to act on the systems perpetuating the climate crisis.

We will accomplish this through three overarching strategies guided by our team:

  1. Overcoming disinformation
  2. Centering anti-racism and systemic equity
  3. Personalizing and localizing climate change action

Overcoming Disinformation:

One strategy includes mobilizing key stakeholders, such as K-12 educators and partners, to direct outreach and programmatic resources where disinformation is most damaging, such as districts and schools that have received Heartland Institute misinformation.

Centering Anti-Racism and Systemic Equity:

One strategy includes building shared understanding about the intersectionality of systems and the relationship between racial justice and climate justice.

Personalizing and Localizing Climate Change Action:

One strategy includes scaling programmatic efforts by building deep relationships in new geographic communities, guided by intensive listening sessions to better understand communities relationship to climate change and agency to address it.

We are excited to share our framework and look forward to providing more on the implementation across our audiences and programs in the coming months.

The climate crisis continues to be a moral call to action: it’s affecting every aspect of our society, all species, and especially young people, Indigenous, Black, Brown and Communities of Color first and worst. Together, we can address the climate crisis with the tenacity, compassion, and urgency it demands and the justice that is deserved.
